The Master Plan

History of the Cornell Master Plan for the Ithaca Campus

Growth on the campus in the last several decades has been characterized by increasing interdisciplinary collaboration, changes in the distribution and organization of academic units on the campus as well as shifts in precinct boundaries.  This pattern of interdisciplinary collaboration is likely to continue into the future and be more pronounced.  Planning during the last three decades has focused upon dealing with the internal impacts of growth – balancing open space and density on the central campus, maintaining a pedestrian-oriented environment, preserving landscape features and views, meeting increased service and infrastructure needs for new research buildings, development at the edges and thinking innovatively about connecting academically and physically across an expanding campus.  These will continue to be concerns for the future, and need to be looked at in creative and different ways.  In addition, the impacts of future development on the campus edges with the community will be included in our consideration as we plan for the future.
